SSK moves to increase senior surgeons’ involvement

The Surgical Society of Kenya (SSK) Council held a consultative meeting with senior members of the profession at the School of Medicine, University of Nairobi on 23rd January, 2015.
On behalf of council, Prof. Saidi Hassan outlined the SSK vision and strategic goals for 2013-2018. His brief included efforts with enhancing quality of scientific conferences, establishing beneficial networks, the SSK office at Hurlingham, programs for surgical trainees, governance and strategy execution and the establishment of the surgery Foundation.
The senior surgeons engaged in discussions on a wide range of issues including approaches to training, professionalism, surgical workforce and devolution, offshore surgery, welfare and philanthropy. They resolved to support the association with mentorship roles, advocacy and exploration of alternative revenue lines. They supported the establishment of the Foundation and proposed the following to spearhead it: Prof. Magoha, Mr. Patel, Mr. Oketch and Mr. Khan.
Present at the meeting were Mr. Yusuf Kodwavala, Prof. Pankaj Jani, Prof. Stephen Ogendo, Mr. Andrawes Safwat, Mr. Moses Oketch, Mr. S.C. Patel, Mr. George Jumba, Prof. Saidi Hassan, Dr. Nyaim Opot, Dr. Kirsteen Awori, and Dr. Eric Hungu.
